WELLNESS & SELF CARE

Dual income, no kids isn’t just a tax status—it’s a season of life with a unique kind of freedom. You may not be paying for daycare or school supplies, but you are paying with your time, energy, and attention. The real question is: are you spending those on things that actually make you healthier and happier—or just on nicer versions of what everyone else is doing?
Let's talk about emotional wellness - protecting your relationship (and your sanity). Sometimes we get overburdened with stuff going on in life, so it's important to schedule a weekly "no-logistics" date where you don't talk about bills, work drama or family politics because sometimes DINKS can drift into roommate mode—your “budget for connection” matters as much as your financial budget!
We can use our flexibility as well to our advantage when it comes to physical health. Use flexible evenings/mornings for consistent movement. Go to the gym together, go for walks together (this is very grounding and soothing) being in nature if you can.
Create shared health goals. Ours for this year is losing weight and meditating together. We've been cheating way too much and our bodies are feeling it! When the weather isn't cooperating we have workout equipment in our home that we use and when the weather is cooperating we go walking before dinner even if it's for 30-minutes. Your metabolism gets a boost and when you get home and eat dinner you're burning those calories a bit quicker then if you didn't go walking!
One of the things that we try to do and would highly recommend is to cook at home as much as you can. I know sometimes it's difficult if you come home from work tired, but believe me it pays off in the long run cooking something healthy then eating take-out! We spend several hours on Sunday doing meal prep for the week. It does take some time out of our Sunday, but it definitely is worth it. During the week after work we have time to go walking or do something we enjoy and sit down to a nice, healthy meal without scrambling to find something to make. We'll make sure we include in the next blog about meal prepping for DINKS so, keep an eye out for it!
Meditation before bed works wonders for your brain, health and sleep. There are many meditations offered online on YouTube these days. We're big on meditation so, I'll make sure I write a blog about the different types of meditation you can do together as a couple. My other half tends to fall asleep during meditation, which is good for a good nights rest. It's nice to quiet the mind and go within as much as you can. We learn so much about our bodies when quieting our mind and listening to our bodies, not our minds running at 100 mph!
One big thing for great health is socialization. We know that a lot of things are online these days, but socializing online isn't the same as socializing in person. Socialization will improve your health tremendously. Consider hosting monthly game nights, Sunday dinners, double-date hikes, etc... with friends and other DINKS couples. Join Meet-Up or search EventBrite for groups/events going on near you to meet like minded individuals. You can also check out Facebook groups as well!
Protect your future health with regular checkups, healthy eating habits and exercise.
Below are some tips for DINKS to create and sustain a healthy relationship, wellness and happiness!
Daily
Each of you chooses one "health anchor" (i.e. go for a walk, workout together, cook a delicious home‑cooked meal, etc...).
Weekly
One “no logistics” date to connect emotionally.
One shared check‑in about schedules, finances, and household tasks.
Monthly
One new experience together (small or big) like trying a healthy new restaurant, go on a day or weekend trip, take a class on something that you enjoy as a couple, go for a hike and enjoy the outdoors, try a museum that you haven't gone to yet, check your local area for concerts/live music.
One "state of the union” discussion about how you’re both feeling in your relationship, health, and finances. Remember, communication is the key!
Yearly
Review your goals for health, money, travel, and relationships.
Adjust your budget so it actually matches your priorities, not just your habits.
Just remember, the rule isn’t perfection; it’s one deliberate health choice, every day. Small steps = great rewards!
You don’t need a perfect plan to get started. Pick one change for your body, one for your mind, and one for your relationship, and commit to them for the next 90 days. Small, consistent actions will do more for your wellness and happiness than any dramatic overhaul—and they’re exactly where the DINKS lifestyle quietly becomes your greatest asset!
